Hi Everyone! On February 2nd we will be having a Trivia and Game night! We will be playing Geologic Balderdash, with definitions specific to geosciences. The directions for this game are listed below. There will be Pizza, Cookies, Brownies, Drink, and Music! Feel free to stop by!! :) Game Directions: 1. Have each person roll the dice. The person who gets the highest number is the Dasher and must go first. He then readsa geologic word aloud. 2. All other players write down what they think the answer is on a sheet of paper. If you do not know the correct answer, make one up. You can make your answers as outlandish or deceptively simple as you like. For example, if the category is Weird Words, and the Dasher calls out "shuttlecock," you should write down what you think is a convincing definition of the word (or the real definition if you know it). All other players do the same thing. 3. Pass your written answers to the Dasher. He reads them over to himself first. If a player has written the correct definition, the Dasher rewards that person three points and he or she cannot play for the remainder of the round. The Dasher reads aloud all the definitions, mixing in the real definition from the game card. Each player guesses the real answer, and the Dasher notes how many votes each answer receives. Each person who correctly guesses the real answer gets two points. For every false answer, the player who submitted the answer gets one point. If no one guesses the real answer, the Dasher gets three points. If you have any questions, contact Ali Steullet @ steulletalk@my.ccsu.edu |

Fall 2011
Hi FoE members!
Welcome back to CCSU! I have sent out a survey today in order to help me organize this coming semester. I will keep you all posted on upcoming trips, guest speakers, and special talks as I receive input for meeting times.
Please take a few moments to complete the following very short survey.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ FKZZ7PM
Upcoming Trips:
With mineralogy being a course offered this fall, I would like to put together a few quarry trips. Roxybury Garnet Mine, Herkimer Diamond Mine in New York, and Case Quarry are all potential options. Please contact me with any additional quarries you wish to go to through the club and I will do my best to see what I can do to make it happen (permits, etc.)
Talks:
Because we have not yet decided on a meeting time, I do not have exact dates for upcoming talks quite yet. I will be giving a talk on the Ireland Field Course Abroad I completed over the course of two months this summer, and Dr. Wizevich will be giving a talk on his adventures in Iceland, and/or field camp. If you have any additional guest speakers in mind, please do not hesitate to contact me at steulletalk@my.ccsu.edu.
Fantastic Geology Picture of the week:
Beautiful Cirque located in Dough Lough, Ireland. Moraines, after moraines, after moraines! (28 mapped to be exact!) Find out more about these fantastic features in geomorphology this semester!
Cheers!
Ali

Updates
Hi Fellow FoE!
Thanks to all of those who attended Dr. Larsen's talk this past week!
At this past club meeting, we discussed upcoming talks and events, such as attending AMNH and the Geological Society of Connecticut meeting on October 4th. I have listed some of the information on this GSA meeting below.
Upcoming Talks:
1. Dr. Evans will be giving a talk on October 28th @ 11am, called, “Now You See it, and Now You Don’t: the Blue Ridge Fault in Northern Virginia.”
2. Dr. Wizevich will be giving a talk in the library on October 4th (The same day as the GSC meeting, I believe at noon.) on Antarctica. He will also be giving a similar talk on this topic on November 17th at 3:30.
Information on Events:
1. The link below is to the GSC webpage. If you are interested in attending, click on the link that says registration form. It is $40 dollars for nonmembers and $35 for members. You can sign up to be a member by clicking on the membership link in the lefthand panel.
https://wesfiles.wesleyan.edu/home/pletourneau/Geological_Society_of_Connecticut.html
2. Shannon has also emailed a member of the CT watershed council in regard to a river clean up act. I will let you know information on this as I find out more.
3. If anyone is interested in attending a day trip to AMNH, the American Museum of Natural History, please be sure to let me know ahead of time. The potential date we will be going is December 4th. (Saturday) It has been a great trip the past two years and is a spectacular museum.
4. We have set a potential trip date to go to the Roxbury Garnet Mine in Connecticut on November 7th. This will be a trip morning into afternoon, and we should be back by 3 or 4. If you are interested in going to this trip, please let me know so I can plan transportation accordingly.
Have a great week! Good luck on all your first exams coming up.
